AI helps technicians analyse faults in machines

Artificial intelligence has been the focus of the machine industry for decades.

Now, researchers at ETH Zurich have developed an algorithm that can detect whether a machine is about to break down. This is done by analysing the sound the machine makes. If the sound of a machine indicates wear, the system sounds an alarm. It even goes so far that the algorithm teaches itself to recognise the relevant patterns. What the algorithm cannot do is recognise what is wrong. This requires experienced mechanics and technicians.

This algorithm allows mechanics and technicians to concentrate on the interesting part of their job, which is to find and fix the faults.

Test your know-how. Can you tell the difference between a "healthy" and "not healthy" machine?
